Rimini, a city in Italy
Rimini is a city and a commune of the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy. With the total population of about 141,000 it serves as the capital of the Rimini province and is a major trading and tourist center. The city is situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea between the two rivers Marecchia and Ausa. Rimini is one of the most popular resorts of the Adriatic coast of Italy and also has developed coast navigation and fishing industries.
During the history Rimini was inhabited by many peoples - Etruscans, the Umdrians, the Greeks and the Gauls until in 268 B.C. the Romans founded here a colony. It was an important stronghold against the Gaul invasion and an important trade route that connected central and northern parts of Italy. Many Roman leaders favored Rimini. It was here when Caesar made his famous speech at the Forum of Rimini after crossing Rubicon. Such famous emperors as Augustus and Hadrian made a lot for the development of the city. During their rule were built such monuments as Arch of Augustus, Tiberius' Bridge and the Amphitheatre and the church of San Stefano. During the Middle Ages Rimini belonged to many nations such as Goths, the Byzantine Empire, Alamanni and Italian families as well as to the Holy See. Until 1797 Rimini was a part of the Papal States, but was captured by Napoleon and became a part of Cisalpine Republic. In 1860 Rimini finally was included into the Kingdom of Italy.
Due to the rich history Rimini was able to preserve a lot of monuments of different epochs. It is impossible to visit them all, but the most popular are San Francesco Cathedral, The Arch of Augustus, The Tiberius Bridge, The Roman amphitheater, The Castel Sismondo, The bell tower of the former Cathedral of Santa Colomba and many others.
